Exceeding the Righteousness of the Pharisees

Matthew 5:20

 

Introduction:

A.  Pharisees were separatists.

B.  Jesus issues a challenge.

C.  Some facts about Pharisees.

 

I.  The righteousness of the Pharisees.

A.  They were celebrate for their knowledge.  Mark 7:1-7

B.  In religious matters they were earnest.

C.  They were generous.

D.  they practiced self-denial

E.  They were zealous personal workers.  Matthew 23:15

Question~can we hope to excell them?

 

II.  What was wrong with the righteousness of the Pharisees ?

A.  External (actions)and morality (clean life)j do not go far enough.

B.  What were their motives?

 

III.  Our righteousness exceeds because of love and motives.

IV.  Results if we do not exceed their righteousness.

John 14:1-6    1Peter 1:1-3

 

Conclusion:  We should never do an act just for show.  Are you a Christian?
